How to Choose Boxing Gloves: Weight, Fit and Training Use
Share
Choosing boxing gloves involves more than picking a design. Glove weight, your body weight, training use, closure and hand fit all affect comfort and performance.
Start with your training
- Bag work: look for durability, wrist support and a stable impact feel.
- Mitt work: prioritize comfortable gloves that let you close your fist naturally.
- Sparring: consider both your hands and your training partner.
- Daily training: balance durability, padding and comfort.
Understanding ounces
Ounces, abbreviated oz, describe glove weight. Heavier gloves often have more padding, but construction and intended use matter too. Weight alone does not determine protection.
| Boxer weight | General starting range | Suggested use |
|---|---|---|
| Under 45 kg | 6–10 oz | Youth or light technical work |
| 46–68 kg | 10–14 oz | Mitts, bags and general training |
| 69–80 kg | 14–16 oz | General training; sparring only when approved by your coach |
| Over 80 kg | 16–18 oz | Training and sparring, subject to gym requirements |
These are general guidelines, not universal rules. Some gyms require 16 oz for sparring regardless of body weight. Always follow your coach's requirements and check each model's intended use.
Choose by activity
Typical starting ranges are 12–16 oz for heavy bags, 10–14 oz for mitts, 14–16 oz for general training and 16–18 oz for sparring. Competition gloves are often 8–10 oz, but the rules of the event determine the permitted weight and equipment.
Check your hand fit
Measure around the knuckles of your dominant hand. As a broad reference, 13–16 cm is a small or youth fit, 16–19 cm regular, 19–22 cm large, and over 22 cm may need extra internal space. Fit varies between models. Try gloves with the wraps you actually use during training.
Velcro or lace-up?
Velcro is quick and practical when training alone. Lace-up closures allow a more adjustable fit but generally require assistance. Neither closure replaces checking that the wrist and hand fit properly.
How should gloves feel?
- Secure, without excessive movement inside the glove.
- Enough space for wraps, without restricting circulation.
- A natural fist position without pressure forcing the hand open.
- A stable wrist and comfortable knuckle position.
Choosing your first pair
Lighter beginners often start with 12–14 oz for technical work, bags and mitts. Many adults consider 14–16 oz for general training; users over 80 kg often begin at 16 oz. For regular sparring, ask your coach whether 16 or 18 oz is appropriate. Check fit and intended use before buying.
